Much smaller places than Scotland survive on their own. I wish them the best of luck.

Yeah, well, the money they get from the despised English helps. People forget that. They're quite happy to slag us off but more than happy to take our money.

The worst of the anti-British sentiment in NZ came about 20 years afterbthe separation. I was lucky enough to be an English kid in kiwi primary schools at the time. It was awesome.

Yeah, everyone hates us, but they all want our money, our trade, our armed forces.

There's been a lot of very unpleasant anti-English sentiment on social media these last few weeks - maybe I should kill myself to show penance for it? - and a lot of it has stemmed from people who do not have a clue about the union, the history, or anything else. The Scottish have done very well out of being part of the Union - they have their own legal, education, and tax system, not to mention the fact that Scottish MPs get elected to our Parliament and vote on matters pertaining to the English. Oh, and they also get generous subsisdies generously provided by English taxpayers. Do they give us anything? NOPE. Frankly, part of me thinks the English should have been allowed to vote - we'd have got shot of them.

If that's me being racist, I don't care.

Yeah, I can imagine this sort of referendum would bring out all kinds of unpleasantness, and being on the receiving end is never a good time. Our national election is today and it will be a close one. Sentiment around that is running high and people are being quite aggressive in some quarters.

I can't speak to English/Scottish politics with any real knowledge, but I think it's a shame you've felt personally affronted by the attitudes of those who wish independence. NZ, I think, had been better off since separation, but I don't think that excuses people being horrible to me as a kid for being English.

No it doesn't.

One thing that also made me angry at University was that we had *a lot* of East Coast Americans at my Uni in the mid-90s, all of whom claimed to have had Irish descent. Memo - having a fourth cousin once removed who once bought a pair of shoes in Dublin does not make you Irish, and it does not excuse you for saying to me that the IRA should kill me. Not funny, you stupid assholes.
