10:31 am - More ideas than time, damnit

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

Last night I sat down and drew stuff.

What I'm interested in doing is making clothing that blurs the boundary between clothes and costumes. My friends will know I've been doing this for a while, whenever I get struck with an idea. But lately I've started to have ideas more often, and to develop an aesthetic based on having made all this armour, and the desire to be able to run around, roll around, dance, be warm, have pockets, and look good, all at once.

Thus, pictures.

What I'm realising is that men's clothing is boring. Not that this is news, I've written about it before. But there's a real challenge in coming up with interesting ideas for men - a lot of the things that make women's clothing more varied and interesting are considered, well.. feminine. And while there are some men who are keen to transgress gender norms in clothing, plenty aren't. Turns out this area interests me quite a lot as a challenge - interesting clothing for men that utilises elements that are usually considered feminine, while keeping them manly-looking.

So now I have three pictures in front and back view - 2 for men and 1 for MEEEE!!! (I often forget to make stuff for myself among all my fantasies of dressing up my friends). Oddly enough, the one for me incorporates elements that are usually considered masculine, and is the most armour-y looking one. Because that's how I roll, apparently.

Now to become independently wealthy so I have the time to make all these things... my current forward project list goes like this:

Minor finishes to Saarebas
Flying Carpet
Fandangle
Wendy's Horny Project

If I dedicated all my time to them, these would be finished by the end of October. Realistically it'll be more like November. Which leaves December and half of January for new designs.

Anyone out there want to become a patron for my 'art'? I promise you pictures of strangely-dressed hot people in return...

after my dragon con experience, I'm imagining pictures of actual hot people - like, people wearing your beautiful designs, melting into puddles of sweat ;)

That happens. If you're in the right place (ie not a con) you can just take it off though. O.o

Aw, thank you! I'm excited to make things, but I must make at least some decent inroads into that list up there first...

Men totally need more interesting clothes. And stuff to dance in, be warm, plus pockets etc = hell yeah. And why is it that pants that look good never have pockets?

Well, the excuse that gets trotted out for women's clothing is that pockets (or more specifically, having things *in* the pockets) ruin the line of the clothing. This is because much women's clothing is tailored (read: tight).

I was a huge fan of the skater look in the late 90s/early 2000s with the tank top and cargo pants, partly because POCKETS!

But I'm interested in experimenting with ways of having pockets that don't make things fit badly.

Yeah, pretty much all my pants are cargo pants or have equivalent pockets. They're the only thing that *works*, but often are kinda crap fitting.

You should talk to Happy about pants. His pants have all the pockets ever, and somehow manage to fit well too.

Funny, when I draw it's usually for myself :-) I'm egocentric that way. I also love the feel of medieval garb and once I add pockets I would really love to wear them instead of my regular business-casual stuff. People would look at me strangely though, I suspect.

[Gah - sent before ready....]

Are you going to share the pictures you drew? I'd love to see them. Especially the female one.

Yeah, most of the stuff I would make is for festival wear. I'd love if we could wear better clothes to work, but apparently that's frowned upon.

I get teased about my pixie hoods on casual Fridays at work, but I reckon half the folks just want it for themselves. ;-)

And I will share the pictures, but not until after they're finalised and approved by peer review. ;-)

If I ever get not-poor, you'd be great for helping Caspian look like a boy while wearing clothes he actually likes! His favorite outfit is a teal top made with metallic sort of cloth, and a ribbon across the front, paired with a matching teal skirt covered dotted with shiny sequinny things. He wears this not because he thinks of himself as a girl, but because he likes teal and sparkles. I feel a bit of guilt at not having the skills to make him homemade clothing that would at least have a sort-of boy look to it, even if it was all pink and teal and purple and rainbow and tulle and sparkles and ribbons.

You have a good idea, I'm sure there's a niche out there of men who wish men's clothes weren't boring as hell!

I'm pretty sure there's a market for armour-for-women too!

Now, to become independently wealthy so I can help all these people realise their clothing visions..

I constantly complain that men's clothing and shoes are SO much more boring than lady items. Ladies can wear everything men can and also all their own stuff.
