Today, people are coming to steam clean the carpets. I've never had this done in a house I'm still living in before, and it feels like a luxurious treat. They are also doing the upholstery. Ooh, posh!

I'm also washing all the blankets and cushion covers because in for a penny, in for a pound, right? God knows they needed it.

Part of me is really liking the minimalist look of the house without All The Things in it. Sometimes I really wish I were one of those people who had interests that didn't require the acquisition of stuff. But I can't really think of any, you know? Pretty much everything requires stuff.

I guess what I really need is a creative space to put all the stuff in, that I can shut the door on when I want to be in a serene and uncluttered environment.

Meanwhile, the YoT was wondering last night why publishing academic articles is a big deal. And you know? I didn't know what to tell him. I mean yes, it's like going "Hey world, I know stuff!" but some people seem to set a lot of store by what (or how much) you have published, and I really don't understand that well enough to explain it to a teenager.

Hmm.

I just sent you a message with a small opportunity for YoT that might also explain "why is publishing academic articles a big deal?" Both a conference or an academic article can show the value, or at least the power, of community dialogue around information or potential. And they can also show the value of having information and research receive more validation than "because I said so."

well you know how like having a credit rating is about borrowing money and paying it back at the required time with the required amount of interest, or having a hirepurchase, and paying that back as required, not to early and not to late, etc etc.. it gives said credit checking solid paperwork to prove that you can pay money back on time, and not early or late so that whom ever is going to loan you money will know this and be able to calucate risque etc etc...

so writing academic articles is similar. but with academics you must be able to back up your argument, and to be able to say something that will add to the ongoing pool of knowledge on that particular subject. so it builds up your academic credit rating, in a traceable and document-able way that is accessible, aka in a journal, and will be searchable online once it is published, so over and above getting excellent A's for you degree you will also have an article published, while still ostensible an undergrad, aka graduated but not yet doing honors...

which means that in the future time what you say and what you write about will have more weight, be considered to be more important, than those who don't have an article published.

err does that help?

I find it quite funny how everyone talks about publishing when studying on advanced level. I have no objections to the phenomenon, but hey folks, let's wait with the publishing until you have something new to say, ok? Everyone seems so eager to publish it doesn't matter if they're adding something new to what's already been said, or just making a repetition. Twice I've gotten comments from tutors at uni on my PM's saying it should be well worth turning into an article and get published. Since I feel I'm not novel enough in my discussions I've so far not taken things further. I'm biding my time and will wait until I really have something new to add.

Yeah. The two times I've been told I ought to publish, I've been really glad I didn't. This one is kind of different, it is fairly new research and the conclusion should be out there in the body of knowledge on the topic, so I'm quite excited about it. Except for the part where I'm really enjoying not having to think academically at the moment.

This sounds like a perfect opportunity to publish, so yay that you get the chance to write the article and get the credits :)
