09:09 am - I look like a bat

So I have my silly hat, silly robe and silly hood thing, and later on today I'll be processed and given my bit of paper, which I'm told is actually goat skin or something but I'm not so sure.

Apparently part of the ceremony involves singing Gaudeamus - a 'traditional university song'. I looked this up, and it turns out that it isn't just traditional for Vic, it's one of those European traditions that lots of Western universities do. It's about how you should enjoy life as a young student because you're a long time dead, basically. Also, it's from back when only men got to have an education, and there's a verse in there about the 'friendly' women who have made the student's lives better. I am all O.o that this is still a thing. Maybe they skip that verse, I dunno. And I won't know either cos it's all in Latin anyway.

University traditions are weird. *eyes silly hat*

I like this video. Pink doing 'Try'. The song is meh, but the video depicts the style of adagio/dance crossover that interests me the most. This one's kind of violent, but the way the dancers move together really works, and they're doing this incredibly gymnastic stuff, while still managing to be dancing (rather than, you know, doing tricks) and are successfully expressing a concept with their dance - in this case, the intersection of passion, sex and violence.

Yeah, well, I think it's cool and I want to do it. Can't see why anyone else wouldn't, eh? ;-)

Last night I downloaded all the gregorian electronica. All of it. Yep. I am a child of the 90s and I am not ashamed. Bite me.

Later today there will be letters after my name. Proper ones, like. No idea where I'll use them tbh. Right now I'm gonna do some soldering.

I'm sure Eric Hobsbawn would have had a view on this - I wonder if any of the courses at Vic teach that book?

Congratulations, BTW. I'd get new business cards made with your letters on, just because..

I like your silly-hat tradition. When I was at university they didn't have that. We didn't have a specific graduation day. You passed your tests, then you wrote your thesis, and that could take between 3 and 9 months. After that you got graded on the thesis and you picked up the final diploma at the secretary's. She shook my hand and was nice about it but it wasn't really anything I'd like to remember. Sad, really.

So, I hope you enjoyed your graduation and threw the silly hat in the air and all that and had a great day :)
