Dear Livejournal,

I understand that it's spring in the most important part of the world where everybody lives, and that celebrating that by putting up a lovely spring green banner so that everyone who counts can feel the love is a thoughtful thing to do, but I'd just like to show you something:

That's what it looks like outside my office today. The autumn equinox was yesterday and since this is Wellington and weather is what we do here, it's decided to be full on stinkyhorriblecoldwetwindy all at once in celebration. I know this wouldn't make a pretty banner and that the majority of the people would go "WTF" but once, just once, could you do a banner theme that doesn't ignore the existence of the other hemisphere? Cheers.

This stuff is called tubular crin (short for crinoline) and it's squishy and stretchy and almost indestructable and also quite lightweight - and I haven't found anywhere in NZ where you can get it. However, I found Cypherlox (warning, ugly site alert!), which sells it at fairly reasonable prices and doesn't charge the earth for shipping. Which they shouldn't because it weighs nothing.

Traditionally it's used for making hair falls thus:

I will probably do some of that, since good hair caps off costumes really well. But I'm also interested in its vaguely machine-y look, like it could be used to add fake hydraulic pipes to art pieces and the like as well. And also, since it's almost indestructible, it might be cool to add to performance costumes because it would handle the knocks as well as not weighing the wearer down.

Anyway, now I have 60 yards of the stuff in various colours. What to do, what to do? I love making costumes but I have to be realistic - how many fluoro cyberhippie raver costumes does one 40something woman actually need? OK, a few. But I want to keep making them. Maybe I should think about selling them? Hmm..

And because I know you all care so much about what I have for dinner, have some Lebanese lentil and rice pilaf with blackened onions, mushrooms and Tats' Extra Added Everything. Also please note the carefully wiped plate...

Where Everything includes sweetgrass, celery, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, a courgette, a radish, spring onion, and some bean sprouts, with a dollop of yoghurt and a sprinkle of parsley on top. The pilaf is almost invisible under this vegetable onslaught, but it's there and was quite tasty although I'm in two minds about cumin. In my brain it's associated with curry and curry is associated with coriander and EW CORIANDER BLEH BLEH BLEH!

*cough*

Speaking of which, I'm starting to wonder if I'm a supertaster. I've always had a sense of smell that seems to be more sensitive than others, and on that list of supertaster things, I dislike alcohol, brussel sprouts, kale, coffee (yes I like it but only in latte form where it's mostly milk - actual espresso I can't do), and grapefruit. I can taste the carbonation in drinks and dislike olives. Also, the thing where I can taste the ram in sheep meat. Hmm.. it would explain quite a lot really.

Finally, I found this on the internet yesterday: Headstone World! For all your online monumental needs! Browse the site, fill your cart with headstones, purchase and have it sent to your door! But be careful when ordering because they can't deliver to PO boxes.

O.o

It's wrong of you not to have gone home to start work on this project immediately.

The LED strip I saw demo-ed at your house is not flexible enough for the crin. I'm sure they come in more flexible flexibilities though. It would also have to be very lightweight otherwise it'd distort the shape.

When I was a toddler, I lived in an apartment above both a baitshop and a headstone shop. I'd go downstairs to pet the cute minnows and then cliimb on the headstone displays. Headstones = fun obvs.

I bet I'm a mediocretaster.

You could make bundles of money making fun tutus with those tube thingies. People charge like $30 for tutus that took them like 15 minutes to make, on etsy and stuff. I bet tube tutus are the next big thing.

OK so for some reason I had it in my head that tubetus was yet another fancy eggplant dish that I hadn't heard of, so I googled it. Oddly enough, I got porn.

Then I clicked. Doh.!

For the first day of spring, nature decided to celebrate by chucking down 6 inches of snow. It rained and melted a bit of it off the roads (and turned our gravel/dirt road to soup, blech), but when we got home tonight it was spitting snow again.

"Spring", my arse! :-P *directs icon at the weather*

I expect it could, since it comes in a variety of widths similar to the tubing. But it might slip around on the alkathene a bit.
