The height advantage - Tactical Ninja

11:40 am - The height advantage

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

The Youth of Today got measured on Monday. Turns out his (fairly short lived) Scoff Everything In Sight kick was indeed another growth spurt. He's 6'4" now. Just like that. And 99kg.

HOLYFUCKHOWDIDIPRODUCETHISTHING? Also, if it were Ye Olden Tymes, he'd be awesome for pulling the plough. Sadly, these are Ye Newen Tymes and the best thing I can think of is to put a wireless receiver on his head. He is also kind of handy for reaching high ceilings to put in skyhooks and in a pinch he could be used to hold down tarps on a windy day. He claims he's also good company and has fantastic taste in music, but he could do those things if he were 5'0" as well.

Also, new pants becoming necessary. Crap. See, if mah offspring had stopped growing at 5'7" I wouldn't have had to buy anywhere near as many pants. Small people are more economical - unless you've a plough needs pulling. So in the Brighter Future where we all have to grow our own food cos we can't afford supermarket stuff, all those new pants will pay off, right?

Logic. I has it.

Kind of related, this morning I had someone try to tell me that a) the increase in average height of people over the last few hundred years is a product of women selecting for tall men and thus inflicting genocide on short men, and b) penis size has been increasing at the same rate.

To which I went "Logic. U NO HAS." Because trying to give a serious answer to something like that is beyond me right now.

Yes, I am sure in the olden days women made their choice of husbands (as women usually did) based on penis size, thusly there being no small penised men anymore. QED.

I saw a bog man in a museum in Ireland, they explained his shortness due to vitamin deficiencies.

Thing is, from what I gather the idea that women like giant penises is only really believed amongst men.

My understanding is that size does matter in some positions, but if you have a small one you can do lots of things that work just fine. If you have an exceptionally large one, plenty of women will only get pain from it. I have heard that men with large penises actually give and receive less sexual pleasure, and that it's not actually a good thing for the owner at all.

It would be SO COOL if more guys had big dicks. Sadly, this is not really the case. Although I've admittedly been spoiled most of the time.

He is 16, and quite keen to not get tall enough to bang his head on doors, although at this point anything's possible.

He is now officially the tallest in our family for the last 2 generations.

While someone saying "inflicting genocide on short men" is overdramatic, sexual selection is likely to influence height of the individuals. In addition, there are some Hox genes which control both limb and genitalia development, so the two are not completely uncorrelated.

This is true, but the scientifically demonstrated reason for the height increase isn't evolution (which is too slow to show the results we've seen), but improved nutrition and standard of living meaning more children reach their maximum height potential.

This guy was postulating, essentially, that "The tall alpha men with big dicks get all the girls." *eyeroll*

Do not underestimate the ability to reach high places and things like gas pedals. If he wants a girlfriend he should hang out in a grocery store and chivalrously offer to help the short chicks climbing on shelves to reach the nice stuff. That is, if 16 year olds do grocery shopping...

I think it's tough to be either smaller or bigger than the average, but studies show (studies!) that taller men have an advantage in business and politics over shorter men.

Are you *entirely* sure he wasn't switched at birth with the offspring of a very tall Viking couple? Because beyond that, I have no explanation.

add plumbing and lighters...

and I'd agree. :)

I'm just sayin'

Your offspring is mighty tall, mz tatz. Though I'm 6 ft (and shrinking? but that's a topic for another journal entry) and my kid brother (aged 26) is 6'5". My husband-creature is 6'4", so if you and the kid ever came to visit, he'd feel mighty comfortable.

The height a person reaches as an adult is a result of their genes as well as general health and nutrition during their years of growth. Normal growth is controlled by hormones such as growth hormone, sex hormones and thyroid hormones. You can also try some herbal supplement.
