Doctor Who?

Devil sticks - repaired.
Christmas presents - wrapped.
Open home - dealt with.
Da Vinci machines - looked at, played with, debated about, enjoyed.
Sheep - not shorn. ;-( This means I will be doing the shepherd thing on Christmas Eve. Should I take myrrh and frankincense? Should they give me gold?

I was particularly taken with the war machines. He'd invented this device that was used to defend castles from people on ladders scaling the walls. It was basically a bar that ran along the top of the wall and could be pushed forward using struts that went back through holes in the wall, and would tip over about 5 ladders at once. Clever!

So then he invented a device that could be used to get over this thing by using a right-angle support system instead of leaning a ladder.

What I gathered from this was that he spent a lot of time at home playing war games with himself.

I also liked the self-supporting bridge. And was amazed at how many of his inventions (well, at least the principles behind them) are still in use today. I was disappointed that we didn't get to try out the car thing, because now we'll never know why the winding handles needed to be attached to leaf springs AND set on small pivots. I could only think 'to prevent shock load on the pulleys' but couldn't see how the pulleys would get shock loaded in the first place, and without actually trying it, none of us could figure out what that bit was for. Not even Dr Science...

Also, I'm really glad someone invented pneumatic tyres for bicycles. Just saying.

fuvenusrs, you need to go to this exhibition. *nod*

Some guy:

Another thing - I really don't see the point in making everyone go to work for half this week. Most of the people I need to deal with for my job are already on holiday - I have things to do but it's all make-work, and realistically, how much actually gets achieved this week?

Yeah, I know, you could make an argument that if we finished at the end of last week, no work would get done the last couple of days anyway.. but at least I'd be outside on this beautiful summer day!

(solstice was yesterday. this means tommy is now 13 1/2, the days get shorter as of today, it's High Summer people, why are we at work again?)

And.. Canaan Downs excitement is kicking in in a major way now. I may have been browsing photos of the site (which I've never been to) and drooling a little. And jumping up and down and squeeing some.

In fact, I think I'll make *SQUEE* the theme for this summer. So far, it's been a bit like being hurled from a catapult, but in a good way. I have to keep pinching myself.

Have a limerick:
A bather whose clothing was strewed
By winds that left her quite nude
Saw a man come along
And unless we are wrong
You expected this line to be lewd.

*looks* What?
