pigtails

Yesterday I bought CLOTHS

(Fandangle would be proud)

It's that time of year again. The season's changing, it's dark in the morning when I get up again, Kiwiburn's over for another year, and I'm restless. As usual, I'm also struggling with the 'could be 25 degrees, could be 14' nature of Wellington's late summer. And totally over my work wardrobe. So off I went to spend some money on Stuff To Wear To Work.

These days I try to shop ethically. I'm painfully aware of the privilege in being able to do this, but my view is if you have privilege you may as well try to use it for something good - so yeah I did just pay about four times as much for a couple of dresses and work cardies than I could have had I gone to the Warehouse (USians, think Walmart or Target). But for that I get to know that my clothes are made out of ethically sourced materials and made by people who get paid a living wage. Also, they fit better. And they'll last a lot longer.

Anyway, the last time I bought this type of clothing was about 5 years ago. In that time I've gone from a size 12 to a size 8, even though I'm the same size and shape that I've been for pretty much the last 10 years. When I was in the US in 2005 I was a size 6 (at least in the 1 pair of jeans that I bought there). Someone else I know from there has gone from a size 4 to a size 0 in the same time.

I conclude from this that there is a move to standardise women's clothing sizes - naturally towards the US sizing which is seen as default in much of the western world. Same thing's happening with shoes. I used to know what size I was - UK 4.5-5. But UK 5 is US 7.5 and Australian 6 and now NZ is going with Australian sizes and I have no clue whatsoever about European sizing..

What I do know is that if the current trend in vanity sizing continues we will all be in the negatives in a few years' time. And no doubt someone will use this to shame someone, because people can be pretty awful like that.

Meanwhile, I have two new dresses, a skirt, a tank top with a nice back, and some work cardies, all size fucking 8. Nyah.
