Apartheid with aliens

District 9 reminded me a lot of Sleeping Dogs.

(Disclaimer: I saw Sleeping Dogs a very long time ago when I was about 9 or 10, and the plot, characters and sfx - such as they were in 1977 when it was made - are very different. But it left me with the same feeling at the end, and I've always thought Sleeping Dogs should be up there with Goodbye Pork Pie as must-see kiwiana viewing. Plus it has young Sam Neill and he's hawt)

Anyway, it was a good movie, in the same way the Gormenghast novels are good - I didn't particularly enjoy it (too much heart-of-darkness stuff for enjoyment imo), but I found myself pulled into its paradigm, so that I felt the story rather than watching it with detachment, and woke up blinking and disoriented at the end. To me that's a sign of a well-made movie. I wonder what the South Africans think of it - and I'm going to have the chance to find out!

It also reassured me that I'll have no trouble understanding the accent in South Africa, and caused me to give more thought to travel insurance. ;-)

Today is the Giant Meeting of Finality and it's all about concrete. As of tomorrow I'll be hanging a Do Not Disturb sign on my desk and telling anyone who comes near me to piss off. Ah, the joys of geekdom!
