Dear America

We've been hearing a lot from the US about 'socialised' healthcare lately. The debate is, apparently, raging. I don't feel the need to link you to the accusations of Obama being a Nazi, or to the woman who shouted "Heil Hitler" while an Israeli man was talking to a reporter about healthcare in Israel. I don't know the ins and outs of it very well at all. What I do know is that we have public funded healthcare in New Zealand. We also have a private system, and some people choose to have medical insurance so they can opt for private treatment if they want it.

I"m not selling NZ healthcare as any kind of standard to be followed. I think our system could stand improvement too. But I'm extremely thankful when I or my family members get sick, that our system is public-funded. It means I actually get healthcare, without hassle - minimal paperwork, nobody telling me I'm not sick enough, no argument from an insurance company about what I'm covered for.

I fail to see what the Nazi-accusers are so afraid of. I would be disappointed if the Obama administration backed down on this to the vitriol and ignorance that's being thrown around out there. I'm sure there are intelligent arguments against public-funded healthcare, but they are not reaching my radar at this point - I haven't even seen ONE.

Also, I think trickle-down economics is bullshit.
