We buried Dad today. It was all very simple and without fuss, and we planted a pohutukawa tree over him, which will flower every year around his birthday.

It feels nice to know he'll be nearby, even though I know it's just his leftovers, and the real person is inside us, in our genes and in our curiosity about life and our sense of adventure, our questioning of authority and need to understand, and (in my case anyway), my damned knobbly knees. He left so much more than just a pile of ashes.
