The mystical magical interweb

I read this article this morning. Apparently, the former head of the CIA, George Tenet, said it might be necessary to limit access to the Internet because terrorists could use it to attack the United States. He thinks only people who can 'prove that they take security seriously' should be allowed to use the net.

Okay, so who would want to use an internet that only had people on it who were approved by the US government? Hands up! No? Me neither.

Got me to thinking about how much a part of my life the internet is these days. It was really brought home to me when our cable went down for two days. Argh! Communication by telephone! No lj! How on earth will I know what my friends are up to? No email. How will I organise my life? And worst of all, no Google. Whatever would I do without instant access to information about anything?

I'm sure I'm not the only one, and I'm definitely not the worst case of Internet Reliance. If the US government were to ban individuals from using the net on a large scale, I could see that causing some pretty mighty civil unrest. I picture millions of WoW players storming the Whitehouse with Arcane Explosions. Disgruntled chatroom geeks constructing bombs in their bedrooms. Never mind the number of businesses that would be crippled. Way to make sure the US economy dies quickly.

Surely they can't be serious?
