There's an LJ revival thing going on - ironically, on Facebook. But it inspired me to make a post.

This year I've struggled to post regularly. Main reasons for this include:

- moving to a contracting position where I'm actually busy at work and don't need to kill hours at a time
- feeling like everything I've wanted to say, you've all heard before anyway
- virtually none of my real-life friends post here any more, or read, which means that a lot of the funny shit that used to happen in comments doesn't any more and comment threads are often a bit awkward with people who don't know each other well posting things that are safe and supportive rather than challenging and/or amusing. It's really hard to come up with anything other than 'thanks!' to those, even though they are lovely and well meant
- feeling like I can't keep up with my flist and feeling guilty about posting and expecting commentary when I fail to comment on other people's posts.

I even thought about deleting it. But then I thought "Fuck it." I've kept this journal since 2003 for a reason, and it has some pretty major milestones in it. The deaths of both my parents, buying my first home, the day Trent Reznor convinced me to become an advocate for legal acknowledgement of responsible drug use, getting together with Dr Wheel, my first through 11th burns...

Yeah, so it's still here. Maybe I *do* have more to say. Maybe someone *is* still reading. And right now I am on holiday, with two glorious months of not-working stretched in front of me (thank you contracting for paying well enough to allow me to do this). I will be working, but it's volunteer work doing harm reduction at festivals, and keeping the data so we can prove that it's effective. I'm excited about this and grateful for the way things have miraculously aligned* to allow this to happen.

For today, instead of profundity, have a pic. This is a screenie from a video in which a friend and I swum around in a dive pool with a pole, a photographer, 250metres of tubular crin, and masses of chiffon. Proper pics to follow once we've gone through the proofs and picked out the ones we like. So far the winning shot has neither of our faces in it. Oops. :D

Untitled

* When I say 'miraculously aligned' I actually mean 'I've worked my arse off on this for the last 8 years and finally people have noticed and got behind it.'

I'm still reading.
I didn't realize that TR was the direct inspiration for your life project. (Might not be LIFE, but 8 years is getting close.)

I feel as though it's my life's work- at least in terms of 'how I can change the world' anyway.

Here is the post I made when I decided to do it. He wasn't exactly the direct inspiration, but cheesy posting of song lyrics is what LJ is all about, right?

Agreed! Although I admit that I don't read as much as I used to, no more constant refreshing to see who's posted..

I know what you mean - especially about real life and work and not having hours to kill at a time. It stopped me from posting a lot as well. And reading and commenting.

I am glad you are still here though. I love your posts and pictures. The one under water is great.

I know we've only met once or twice (and years ago at that) but for what it's worth, I'm still reading!

But nice to see a post from you.

How do you find time to post outside work? I'm on holiday right now but usually by the time I finish work the last thing I want to do is sit at a computer some more.

Still reading! I haven't posted much to my LJ after I launched my website, but after six months, I'm thinking about returning for more personal posts. That connection isn't fulfilled in the same way on the blog, even though there is lots of friendly chatter there in the open thread posts. It's not the same. Like you, I have well over a decade invested here.

I'm glad to see your voice back on my friends feed. We've never met, we'll most likely never meet, but I think you're a fascinating and inspiring person and I'm grateful for this medium that I got to see a little bit of your life!

Yeah, there are some things that aren't quite suitable for a public persona, eh? My website is also topical, so if it's not about costume nobody cares anyway.

I too still keep an eye on LJ, even when there isn't a lot going on. I've never been a prolific blogger and only an occasional commenter. There are still things happening here that aren't on that other time sink (fb), and I've never felt the need to be a twitterer.

Amusingly, recently $wife joined the blue rinse brigade by going purple...

Keep on truckin' Lady!

I read most days. I was really happy to see your name pop up on my friends list.

I am feeling a bit meh with social media in general lately. I don't know what it is. I think I'm craving more one-on-one, personal interaction. Maybe even face to face interaction, rather than screen time. I don't know. So many people seem so cynical these days, and it bothers me.

clevermanka said it: We've never met, we'll most likely never meet, but I think you're a fascinating and inspiring person and I'm grateful for this medium that I got to see a little bit of your life!

Indeed I would never even have come across you, and several other of my f-list here and on Dreamwidth, if it wasn't for - well - LJ and DW being built the way they are. I'm essentially a solitary critter who doesn't really like travelling or socialising in large numbers. I don't do Facebook and never will (the ethos has always made me twitch more than most social platforms) but, through LJ and DW, I have "met" several people in distant places whose lives and life-views have widened my view and at times made me think really hard (which is good!). I don't always comment, and I certainly don't expect comments on my posts. So, thankyou, welcome back and I'll be reading whatever you post whenever you post it.

Apparently so many people tried to log in at once that LJ failed because of it. Or at least, that's what people are telling themselves. :)

They may be a while because the photographer apparently has to retouch them and his visit was part of a tour so I expect he'll be extra busy for the next few weeks.

Not very profound comment from me here. Just wanted to say glad you are back. Was wondering where you went.

I sometimes feel the same way about "why bother," but some of this is for myself (maybe my kids 20-40 years from now - I do download a copy each year).

Agree about "miraculously aligned" = "worked my butt of for xxx years." Sometimes frustrating when ppl look at something one has/does/experiences and so "oh you are so lucky..." Luck is when opportunity meets preparedness. Yes there is some luck involved, but often 1% compounded by a huge amount planning and hard work.

Moving to a new job (sort of) has made my LJ life more difficult too. I'm no longer allowed to use the internet for personal stuff, nor do I have the time, and I haven't year figured out exactly how to fit it in.

I never want to give up on LJ though and I'm happy that you're coming back! I missed you!
