Previous Entry Share Next Entry

Last week on the site where I'd pre-ordered my copy of Dragon Age: Inquisition, I noticed that they had it listed as a gift idea 'for him'. Naturally I was a bit incensed by this, so I left a comment on the page saying basically "Oi, lots of women play Bioware games, howzabout a bit of recognition? This game is for everyone!"

Enter a bloke who made it his mission to prove me wrong that women are a significant market for games. He was.. quite rude about it.

I didn't want to participate in a flamewar on Mighty Ape's page, because they are a good company and have already responded to me about the 'for him' thing saying that they are in the planning stages of changing their gift recommendations to be non-gender-based. I respect their good service and since I think having a flamewar on someone's page is rude, I invited the guy to come over to my page to have his debate. I made a public post that allows comments from anyone, and invited him to come present his evidence.

Hilarity ensued.

Here is the post in its entirety, in case you're interested in watching a train wreck in slow motion. Or, in case you need any further evidence of the type of thing that happens when a woman speaks up about sexism in gaming on the internet. I mean yeah, rape threats and death threats get in the news, but this guy up here is more typical of the day to day stuff that doesn't make the news, the far more common and constant unfounded opposition that makes it so exhausting to continue speaking up. And the reason that lots of women can't be arsed even bothering.

Me, I have the view that if women don't bother, these deluded fools will be able to easily continue with their delusion. I have to pick my battles because I'm not always up for dealing with this sort of thing. Somedays I just don't have the energy. Other days, well.. see for yourself. Or don't.

I wasn't deliberately troll-baiting. At least, not till I realised what a prime example of Entitled Ignorant Prat I was actually dealing with. Now, his words are on the internet for everyone to see. I'm not above naming and shaming when someone is so keen to do it to themselves. Happy to facilitate!

Ye gods.

The whine on him...

I remain shocked as all heck by the current generation of trollish gamers.
Not that there weren't malicious or unpleasant gamers in the past...just that the current twerps seem to be outright proud of it.

It's definitely true that when I started playing MMOs, the grief I got seemed much less gender-based and a lot rarer.

I don't know if it's because games have gotten exponentially more popular that this sort of attitude is more common, but I suspect that the growth of the community has brought the arseholes in, in the same way that it does with many communities that start small and unpopular.

I've never been much of a social gamer but I used to read Amiga gaming magazines and newsgroups for tips on adventure gaming and there was much much less of this creepy stuff.

I don't play social games at all any more. Partly because I found that having to meet other people's schedules ruins my escapism, and partly because I caught the front end of this kind of behaviour, which was guys assuming I didn't know how to play because I was female, and constantly having to prove myself also ruined my escapism.

Now I play singleplayer and I love it.

P.S. I have decreed (because that is how this apparently works) that in order to decide on who gets excluded from the tag gamer...a gamer must have made it through all 3 different kinds of insult sword fighting.

I feel pretty confident in saying that Daryl has not.

I doubt that Darryl has done any of the other things that facetious folks decided were the benchmark for 'real gamers' either.

I think I learn your name is Wendy, act surprised that it is so, and then forget what your name is about once every six months.

Apparently Wendys are quite common in my age group, but not so much with the Young Fullas.

Ohhhh maaaannnnn, so into deep accents. I started listening to a podcast where the guys both have thick Aussie accents, and I love it at least half because of that.

Wow. Sorry for the trolls. Sadly there seem to be a lot of them around.

No matter how many hours a week someone plays, wouldn't the company want as many people as possible to buy it? Even if they never once log on?
It does not make sense to me to prelimit it to half the world's population no mater which gender plays 10 hours of more a week...

Apparently being inclusive of women and other minorities in games, ruins it for the people who claim to be the main demographic.

Inquisition is the latest release from one of the debatably most inclusive developers out there, and so far it's received top ratings on the main critique sites. Which kind of squashes the argument of the main demographic. Who, evidence is now showing, are not actually the main demographic.

In other words, they're full of shit and you're right, inclusion has made gaming better for everyone except the entitled prats who deluded themselves that it's a boys' club.

As opposed to Assasins' creed unity which has not covered itself in glory despite limiting itself to a stable of 4 white men (although damned if I don't want to see "random people wandering onto major cut scenes and talking loudly about the exits in French" become a meme).

*lol*

To that I have to say two things.

1) You are all wrong. Real gamers play real games, which is Live Action Role Play. So here ;-P

2) Really? 50%? Wow, that amazes me. I wouldn't have thought that. But then, when I started Larp, about 1/4 to 1/3 of us where women at any given con, and now it's about 50%. XX for the win *g*

That's the thing - a lot of people think that gaming is male-dominated, and so a lot of the marketing is aimed at men, which perpetuates the vieW. Add to this that women often get a hard time when talking about gaming online and therefore speak less or hide their gender, and it again perpetuates the view. It's pretty normal to assume that there are more male gamers than female.

The difference between intelligent people (you) and that guy up there, is that when presented with evidence that demonstrates women are in fact roughly half of gamers, you went "Really?" And started incorporating the evidence into your knowledge. He invested several days of his time, and I'd suggest a significant amount of anger, in trying to make me shut up about the evidence because it conflicted with his view.

I can only assume he has an interest in maintaining the status quo where everyone believes he's in the majority.

"often get a hard time ... or hide their gender"

Erp, nah, I hide my gender online because there are jerks around who hit on you if you've got boobs and are not up the tree on the count of three :-) But yes to the rest. And thank you for the compliment :)

I am guessing he is also very proud of being a "real" gamer and it's possibly the only thing that's special about him. That's true for a lot of larpers as well. Some of them are really just poor devils with no fun in life except when they wield a rubber sword and wear a horned helmet. I guess it's normal that you stick to that one specialty you have if that's all that defines you... *sigh*
