Escapist fantasising, it's for breakfast.

I want this.

Ideally it'd have 25-50 acres, but other than that it's pretty close to my fantasy of where I'd like to live. And I can dream, right?

More pics here.

Small print: Yes I am aware that moving to the wop wops is probably not the smartest thing I could do, especially given the fact that a) I have to work, and b) so does Dr Wheel. Also c) lots of people we like don't live in Taihape's back blocks. But it's so beautiful and the climate is perfect and I could have sheep and an orchard and spend my days making stuff and tending sheep instead of dealing with stakeholders and writing reports! And possibly have a lot of cats.

Keep the dream. Maybe it doesn't work now, but who knows what the future will bring?

It's a beautiful thing. I am awkward and have a hard time with people, but many of your recent writings have closely paralleled things I am going through. I would love to have a bbq and sit around discussing things the way one does with the type of friends I think we could be. I could use a friend.

I would like that. Scheduling is complicated right now cos rehearsals, but December's looking free-ish.

It really is. And the reassuring thing is that there are any number of this type of place available at any given time, so when we are ready...

That's one of the things I'm finding reassuring about Louisville - houses I would like come and go, but there seem to be some available at any given time. So it's okay that I'm not ready yet. I can breathe and have faith that the universe will provide me pleasing options when the time comes.

I think you mean 'intentional community formed by a few selected friends'. ;-)

I think it has distinct possibilities, especially if the friends have been friends for long enough to know how they'd cope in such a situation. We've considered an urban version of the same idea by buying houses in close proximity and sharing resources, in fact we do something like that with a car right now. But of course that's more difficult than having lots of land.

There was some interesting discussion about intentional communities at publicaddress recent with a few links to academic papers on intentional communities in the comments.

Interesting. I've bookmarked it for later and just skimmed, but I'm getting the impression that setting realistic ground rules for ownership and interaction is at the core of successful intentional community. Which makes sense really, and as what we've done with the car share successfully for three years. It's been remarkably hassle-free really, and makes me wonder if attempting it on a larger scale is within the realms of possibility.

Our our forays into car barter (in exchange for letting someone use our computer) have gone really well.

I think imagining the worst case scenario and developing strategies has been really helpful.

That would be neat, but that amount of money would buy way more hills to walk on, with a better climate and a flash house, outside of Wellington.

Damn this need to work!

This is true...

Do you reckon you could tilt the work that you do towards working from home?

We have people still on the payroll but working from Ireland.

I would love a summer cottage!

I would also love to be independently wealthy and have a town house and a country one so I could raise sheep or do circus as the mood strikes me.

I think what will probably happen is some compromise between the two.

I recharge from being someplace like that. I don't know if it would work for me as a 24/7 option, but to feed my soul requires being someplace with lots of space and very few people.

Haven't figured out where to find that sort of thing in KY. Probably should put it on the list.

You should move to New Zealand and become a shepherd. Then you could hike around them all day, with bonus dogs and sheep.
