Previous Entry Share Next Entry

I wrote this big long post that was a simultaneously hilarious and intelligent* critique of today's manufacturing practices, then things blew up at work and when I got back to it I had forgotten I hadn't already posted it, and deleted without saving.

Anyway, the upshot is I am getting my old Karrimor day bag's front zip replaced instead of buying a new one and I feel smug because of supporting local business and not contributing to throwaway culture. Although tbh I'm not sure if buyng a new bag after 6 years' daily use of the old one really counts as throwaway culture.

Also, my Kiwisaver (voluntary govt retirement savings scheme) has gone down in the last month for the first time since I started it. Clearly, investment returns are falling. Meanwhile, home loan interest rates are going up and cost of living is going up. I am not sure this economy is as rockstar as Honest John (sic) would have us believe.

Screw impact drivers, needs moar lasers.

Also, more or less. With some consideration of the way capitalism relies on growth and making purchasing choices that don't support that could have a flow-on effect on those whose jobs require me to buy more stuff. Along with a decision that I can't care about everything all the time, especially when the things are conflicting and my values lean toward bollocks to the $2 screwdriver.

And some irrational guilt about how I can afford to buy quality vs those who can't.

I found myself amused and my thoughts provoked by your well-written critique.

And I am further stimulated by the fascinating discussion that followed your critique. Clearly your readers are also intelligent and astute, as evidenced by the fact that they read you, as well as their scintillating observations.

I believe my Karrimor laptop bag dates back to the early 90s. ISTR buying it on sale at Gatwick Airport sometime around then. Never so much as a broken zip, although the lining is falling to bits now.

The same can not be said of the many laptops it has carried.

I hear the quality has reduced since they were bought out by SportsDirect and the production outsourced to China.

Dreamwidth has one major advantage over LJ on that front - if you start a post, and then abandon it, change your mind, accidentally close that tab, computer fails, etc., it saves it for you anyway. So the next time you click on Post to write something, it asks you if you want to restore from last time. Say yes, and voila! what you previously wrote but didn't post is there again. Even several days later.

LJ does that too, but it wouldn't have helped me because I draft my posts in Wordpad, and I deleted my draft without saving cos I thought I'd already posted it. Doh!

The bag I use for work is easily 20 years old ... I'm afraid if it ever dies and I have to buy another one that that one won't last until I retire!!!

Yeah, I especially hate when I do that with the really long, articulate ones with lots of links in. ;-/
