You've accidentally saved up $1000 by being over-careful with budgeting.

You've already decided that putting it on the mortgage is for sensible grownups, which you aren't.

You want to do something fun and exciting with it.

There are two of you and you live in New Zealand.

What would you do?

Assuming I didn't have any other debts to pay off, I'd probably go on a trip overseas to somewhere I'd never been before but always been curious about. But then, I've been hit by the travel bug pretty bad lately, so pretty much all my plans that don't involve work are about travelling these days.

Hmm.. I'm not sure $1000 would get us any further than Sydney to be honest. At least, not unless we planned to stay in Australia.

I guess we could travel internally...

Yeah... I realised just after posting that comment that travelling overseas from New Zealand is actually really expensive. I've sortof become used to travelling overseas from Japan, which in a lot of instances is much cheaper. That said, you can sometimes get amazingly good deals on the likes of grabaseat.

Travel. Go diving. Take a class. Go to a Con. Hire someone to make something that's currently beyond your skills... buy supplies for an expensive hobby.

how's that?

Hmm.. of those, travel and taking classes appeal the most. I suspect it'll end up being travel, because experiences are awesome and we already do a number of classes.

Eee! Thanks!

Save $500 for the mortgage, and do something fun with the other $500. Buy new video games, go out and eat at some new places you've never been to before, take day trips somewhere?

Rent a campervan for a weekend and go visit hot springs. I recommend Mangatutu and Mangatainoka in the Hawkes Bay.

I'd go for a South Island road trip which would include swimming with dolphins, Fiordland or both.

You're in New Zealand. Isn't the answer bungee jumping?

Here's another vote for the travel. Maybe something fun? Like a wellness weekend or an adventure weekend or something?

Travel! I could recommend Burning Seed as coming in around that budget and only one flight away, if you wanted something relatively soonish and fairly exciting. Ms Jodi says attendance is set to double again this year!

Of course I imagine Dr Wheel might be Burned out for the time being (Hehe, yes, bad pun, don't care!)

I'm boring, so I'd put 2/3's of it to the mortgage/savings. Then I'd splurge on something nice with the rest.

Super not-helpful!

Bloody hell, inference in Finnish cartoons. Awesome.

Also I find it amusing that we have a beach that's almost a Finnish sausage.

I'd go diving. Or spend it getting scuba certified, if you're not.
