Since it seems to be the season for it, I've just cleaned up my friends list. I removed people who haven't posted in forever and who I've given up on ever coming back, people who I went "Who's that?" when I saw them there because it's been so long or we've never actually talked, and people that I didn't click with the way we thought we would. As usual, feel free to remove me if we don't talk, you skim past my posts cos WORDY, or any other reason. I won't be offended.

Meanwhile, that was a fantastic weekend.

Well duh.

But not only for that reason. I mean yes, Dr Wheel = hotness, and all that goes along with it. But something that had been missing from my life while he was away, that I hadn't realised was a thing until he came back, was the way he makes me laugh till I nearly wet myself on a daily basis.

Love that man.

Meanwhile, here's what grist did on the weekend:

He likes to test things to failure, so a failure means a successful test, and a post on StuffIDestroyed.

And I made this:

It's the gloves that carry the light that makes the ball glow, so I can wave my arms around all magicky like on stage. Or in my room, like I was last night.

*ahem*

[EDIT] As it turns out, the city I live in is actually the windiest city in the world. We joke about it, I didn't know it was actually true.

Thanks! I was originally planning to buy some, but then had a brainfart and ended up making them instead.

Thank you! It still has to be sanded and dusted to make it look skoady like the rest of the costume, but I'm pretty pleased with how it came out. ;-)

I will try to get a video of it when the whole lot is working. The first switch was finished yesterday, and once it's installed and going we'll put together the second one. I R EXCITE

Meeeep!

Flashy light-up things! Very cool. How does it work - is the LED wired into the glove, and the ball then goes on top of it, or does the light in the ball plug into some kind of electrical thing in the glove?

There's a bank of UV LEDs in the palm of the glove, with a ring that the ball (which is UV reactive) balances on. These plug to a battery and switch in the cuff (which isn't shown yet - the character wears large brass wrist cuffs that are perfect for hiding batteries and switches in).

I'll get a video of it working once it's all together. Those photos up there are just proof of concept.

Welcome to Wellington - we have weather! ;-)

We like to claim that people here are hardcore because we live here despite the weather, not because of it, and thus Wellington must be really awesome. I'm not sure those who aren't accustomed to the wind would agree.

Ooh that glove is clever, how does it work?

I know you make a lot of costumes, but I've always wondered about sewing leather - is it really hard to sew? It's a pretty tough material.

There's a bank of UV LEDs in the palm, with a supporting ring around them that holds the ball and directs the light upwards. Eventually there'll be a switch that turns it on when I flick my wrists, but those photos are just directly connected to the battery.

I'm told that thin leather can be sewn on a standard sewing machine with the right needle (bladed instead of pointed) - you can get leather needles at most sewing shops. I haven't actually tried it because I generally use thicker leather, and I sew it by hand with a speedy stitcher. It's slow, but effective. I wouldn't say it's hard so much as a bit fiddly and time consuming.

Definitely a great glove. :)

And my friends list hasn't been tided up for YEARS. I really need to do that, but I'm too sentimental ...

It feels kind of liberating, but I wish all the people who don't post any more or don't read any more or whatever would unfriend me, because my list is huge and there's a bunch of people on it that I haven't talked to for years, and my OCD doesn't like it.
