Thanks to everyone who checked in yesterday - I was surprised to find out we made global news again. Everyone is fine, it seems there were no major injuries or damage - partly by luck, partly because anything loose came off in the last one, and partly because this city is built with earthquakes in mind. For example, my building is listed as earthquake-prone - parts of it only reach 35% of current code.* Yet, picking stuff up off the floor was the worst we had to do.

Meanwhile, the earthquakes continue at a rate of about one every three minutes. The scale is diminishing and most are now undetectable (to me, anyway). Hopefully this'll be the last gasp from that group of faults. The atmosphere in the city last night was festive - everyone got to leave work early and we all survived another event. Folks giving each other rides, swapping stories, and being nicer to each other than we normally are.

We have a lot to be grateful for.

* We are obliged to fix this within a timeframe.

Given that the main event Friday was slightly bigger than the one that trashed Christchurch and killed 187 folk, the way we coped with it is testament to being prepared for them - Christchurch was nowhere near as prepared for "the big one" as Wellington is.

I personally missed the big one as I was being driven home from Wellington at the time - I was going to catch the 2:30 train, but a colleague gave me a lift instead.

If you look at peak ground acceleration, what we felt in Wellington yesterday was trivial compared to Christchurch's February earthquake:
http://www.odt.co.nz/node/269051
2.25G in ChCh versus 0.75G near Seddon (and presumably less than 0.75G in Wellington)

So yeah. Yesterday's earthquake was not a big one.

Yesterday's earthquake was not a big one.

Agreed wholeheartedly! I recall seeing a figure around 0.2G - 0.3G for Wellington for the 21July event, and I haven't seen any figures for this one, nor have I had the opportunity to get any comparisons from witnesses. I was standing outside my house for 21July and in a car yesterday.

And yes, ChCh was much worse in that I saw diagrams showing accelerations between 1G & 2G both horizontal and vertical for the 22Feb11 event which was also much closer to the ChCh CBD than yesterdays was to Wgtn CBD. (And I'm nearly twice as far from the epicentres as you are!)

Given that Media seem to focus on the MM value rather than other more meaningful measures, ours would seem to have been larger than ChCh. I guess living in the middle of it all, we are more discerning of the variable measures involved.

We got lucky, that's for sure (so far, anyway).

It wasn't big news, but I saw an online article here in the US.

At a previous job (architectural work), we did work in California, which is earthquake-prone. The whole manner of designing and building in that area is totally different to what we find on the east coast. I'm sure the building codes near you are just as strict. Usually it's the older buildings that predate modern codes that are a problem.

Once again, glad there was no serious damage.

Yeah, you made our news as well ... surprisingly! No deaths - so not news worthy usually. (I'm being sarcastic, sorry!)

Glad to hear everyone is fine, of course.
