My boss this morning - and I quote:

"Open plan offices are a giant agar dish. Quarantine is a good plan I reckon."

Yet another reason to appreciate my workplace. They are eminently sensible about the humanity of their workforce. This is my third day off. In most NZ workplaces, you are supposed to provide a doctor's note for any more than two consecutive sick days. However, this is not primary school and I like to think we can actually be trusted to make our own judgements. Normally for me, I feel a bit under the weather, take one day off and I'm fine. This time I did that and wasn't fine, instead it got worse. Thus, three days off. And nobody's clamouring for a doctor's note because hello, grownups here?

I am not a good patient. Luckily for anyone to whom I'd be a patient, they aren't here. Looking lovingly at you, the fantastically adverbially endowed Dr Wheel. I'm cranky and restless and sweated up the bed last night because I was cold so I put pyjamas on and then I was not cold but I didn't wake up to remove the pyjamas till I'd sweated and got cold again and fuck this noise, basically.

Also, I'm missing training. I realise that sharing my bugs in the gym is just as bad as sharing my bugs at work, and also I can't actually breathe properly or walk up the stairs without panting. However, my brain is punishing me anyway for not giving my body the exercise it's used to, by constantly telling me there's something I should be doing. Gerg.

Also, apologies to tieke's sister for not showing up for her Nerdnite talk. Again with the quarantine and inability to drag my arse out of the house.

Wah wah wah poor me etc.

So here are some good things:

1. Less than a week till Dr Wheel's return! He survived Ohm and is now traipsing about the countryside of the Netherlands meeting relatives. And then he will come home and by then I'll be better.

2. Scale mail - half done and sewn on. Only four more strips to go.

3. Turns out that yes you can sand gesso over thermoplastic with a dremel at 15,000rpm without the plastic melting. Good to know.

4. The YoT went and bought me ice cream.

5. The existence of John Simm.

Actually, I'm done with Life on Mars now and I'm watching the Legend of the Seeker. I was surprised to find that this series had won awards and nominations. I mean, it's OK - I'm still watching - but that's mostly because pretty. And fanservice. Equal opportunity fanservice, even. But, it was filmed in New Zealand and almost all of the actors who aren't the three main characters are Kiwis.

Note to film makers. New Zealanders probably do the worst imitation US accent ever. Actually I don't understand, given that they are supposed to be in a different land for a lot of it, why they didn't just let the kiwis talk like kiwis. The accent is explainable. Instead we get the cringeworthiness of Jay Laga'aia trying to sound American, youse fullas. *ouch*

Also, Episode 6? Called Elixir - "Richard, Kahlan, and Zedd visit a town where peddlers have been selling bottled magic, a thoroughly imprudent practice with far-reaching, dangerous consequences. While Richard and Kahlan try to help the townspeople, Zedd faces off with the man behind the new trade: one of his old students. "

Can we all join in a rousing chorus of "Oh look, magic as a metaphor for drugs yet again!" They don't even try to be subtle about it. And I'd love to know, why is the young lad who's in trouble from buying all the potions and then gets redeemed, the darkest-skinned character I've seen in the show so far? Exactly what are we supposed to take from this?

But.. pretty! And, horses! And fanservice! And the occasionaly really funny fake American accent moment...

Yep, I'm easily pleased.

Meanwhile, this morning there was this:

To which I went "WTF?" Who keeps a check on what their partner is spending on their own credit cards? And why is it up to him to report his wife's stolen ones? I think this person is talking shit in order to get a cheap laugh out of a stereotype. Either that or I come from a different planet from these people. I'm not sure which would be worse tbh.

Seriously, what is it with the drip that you can't blow out or wipe away? It's like a leaky tap and I am unimpressed.

Also, PH3AR MY COMMUNICABLE VIRAL POWERS!

sick, legend of the seeker, fb credit cards

(Link)
I hope you feel better soon.

I watched all the Legend of the Seeker episodes and was sad when the show canceled. I own all the books by Terry Goodkind that the show is based on. Yes, I am obsessed. hehe.

Well, sometimes spouses share credit lines together. Like I open one with my bank and then tell them to give one to my husband with the same number. So maybe that explains the caption?

Yeah, the whole concept of shared bank accounts is pretty foreign to me.

Here most credit cards have insane annual fees. Sometimes it makes better sense to have the spouse with the larger bank account (since often having a large balance in your chequing account leads to "special" accounts that will waive the annual fee) because the fee to add a second person to the card is much less than the annual fee.

That if nothing else is indication that banks aren't really there to help people but instead to make a profit. I can remember when I was a teenager, thinking how impossible it was that I'd ever have enough money in savings to get the 'good' rates from the bank. Now I do have that much, I don't really need them. ;-/

I had some really aversive experiences with shared finances earlier in my life, and consequently I can't imagine ever giving someone else any control of my financial wellbeing nowadays.

At this point I shall refrain from saying, "Well duh! Of course banks only care about money!" but then I come from a farming background and banks have a long history of screwing with both American and Canadian farmers.

We don't need the better rates, but since we never keep a credit balance, we do like screwing the banks. This involves spreadsheets when choosing a card and rankings of just how evil a given bank is. There are some we refuse to deal with at all. I actually kind of miss my US bank which is something I never expected to say!

I'm with you on the shared finances although it certainly is an option. I had my credit absolutely shredded in the past by another person and it took years to sort it out and pay it down.

Ahh, well you're in NZ, so I don't know if they have the same credit card practices there. But pundigrion explained it :)

Ugh ... still not feeling better???

Here you can stay at home for 3 days without a doctor's notice - well, at least in the metal industry where I work. It depends on union agreements.

Yeah, we are supposed to negotiate our own contracts but in reality, most people just accept whatever's offered.

The policy about doctor's notes is often mostly used for when people are suspected of gaming the system - because not every adult is honest as well :(

Also, wrt the credit card thing, you are able to both have a credit card on the same account. We have joint accounts for everything including credit cards and can see what the other is spending just by logging on to internet banking. That said, guy is just being a dick.

Sick leave would be a stupid thing to try and game the system on. At least at my workplace - we're one of those ones where you get the bare minimum 5 days, and no unpaid (at least not that's mentioned in the contract - it's negotiable in reality but I've never had to use it).

the dude is trying to parrot a joke from some standup routine /tv show, or just fancies himself as a comedian.

also, if you want to go "gnngnnngnnnn" how about the news article today about the woman in Hamilton who got stuck in the public toilet? In the "light-hearted" article, widdled with puns of approximately that <-- calibre, referred to at one point as a "hapless female"....
