They're the university's Maori name, which roughly translated means 'house of learning at the head of the fish of Maui' ' the Fish of Maui being the name for the North Island, and Wellington harbour being the fish's mouth. More here.

Maori is an official language in NZ, and has equal standing in state titles. You'll see most government departments and universities and the like have a Maori name under their English one on official documents.

It was pretty fun, although there were 264 BAs to cross the stage so long ceremony was long.

The idea of going back and continuing is alternately exhilarating and terrifying.
