This morning I looked down while in bed, and there it was. An ab! Or maybe if I squint just right and tip my head to one side, two of them! I mean, I know they've always been there but this is the first time I can recall ever being able to see them. And I don't care if nobody else can because I can and holy crap maybe all this pain is paying off.

So what am I going to do with my ab? Straddle press to handstand, fuckitall. Before DoomBoy does because I've been practicing for ages and he just decided he wants to so if he gets there before me there will be gnashing of teeth. Yes, of course it's a competition, and it makes complete sense to put myself in competition with someone who is fit and strong for a living. My advantage is I can actually straddle, and he can't. It's my only one, and I'm taking it.

*cough*

Meanwhile, last night Dr Wheel introduced me to Tekniset (video) - a Finnish psy outfit that someone at his work was playing. I'd hesitate to call it psytrance, but it has a definite psy feel to it, with some bizarrely retro and non-electronica style stuff going on at the top. One of the tracks, I swear contains constipated elves singing death metal. In short, it's awesome, and makes me want to go to Finland. Although, I think the videomakers might be on drugs..

Anyway, it's nice to finally have decent quality music in the house. Yesterday evening was spent revelling in music overload and trying to work out how to set up the amp through a Raspberry Pi so we can remotely choose to run speakers in the lounge or the bedroom, or both, from our phones. Because we're that lazy. And because we're decent people, we didn't play the constipated elves so loud the neighbours could dance to it too - although it was tempting.

Today is a public holiday in New Zealand, so I'm being a slackarse. Later I will go and buy a breadboard - of the sticking-wires-in variety, not the making-your-sammies variety. And then there will be more fingergooping, because it's not really art if it's not messy, so I'm told.

[edit] You know, lately I am seeing a lot of people who are just finishing paying off their student loans. Most of them are within 5 years of my age. This implies it's taken that long to get to the 'educated, owes nothing' place in life, the same way it's taken me that long. Just, different processes. Hmm..

Whereas I paid off my student loans within a few years of graduating, I am still (at almost 40) paying off credit card debt I incurred at that point in my life.

The credit card companies really know what they are doing when they hand out those cards like candy to immature freshmen. Now, I play the credit card shuffle every few years, moving balances to 0% apr cards until that deal is up. Plus, it seems like every time I make a dent then life throws something at me that I just HAVE to have. Or just want really bad. I'm bad at controlling my wants.

I'm also bad at controlling my wants. Which is why I chucked away my credit card 5 years ago and only run a debit card now. WAY better.

When my brother and I bought a house for Mum to retire into, the bank automatically sent me a credit card with a $10,000 limit. I was all WUT. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt and they want to give me the chance to run up more debt? Fuck that. I threw it out.

My plants are already dealt with. This leaves me time to think about batteries, and how crappy they are compared with the things they ought to be able to run.

So far the best we've found is something like this:

http://www.mrpositive.co.nz/turnigy-hardcase-2s-6000mah-25c/

Bearing in mind that I'm not limited quite so much for space. Discussions yesterday managed to reduce max A from 30 to 11 but to take it down any further would make the visual effect I'm after disappear. In fact I'm not all that happy with that really, I'd like to add about 1/3 more LEDs, but fuckit batteries suck etc.

How many LEDs does the mark 4 have? I'm looking at (the minimum we came to yesterday) 192. Ideally I'd like 360 but ow my eyes. Also, I don't want to lug a ton of batteries around, or catch fire spontaneously.

Also, much as I'd like to use the 60/m strip, realistically the 32 works better in this context for the visual effect I'm after.

I figured at some point I'd have to draw a line in the sand and go "OK no more than 1/3 at full power any given time, most likely about 5-10% either in number or PWM most of the time because I don't want to damage any retinas or run out of battery after 5 minutes, and then grist said I should probably talk to you about batteries and stuff.

That is exactly the sort of thinking we were doing yesterday. Questions like:

1. How likely is it that it will ever be running all of them on white at full power? Never.

2. How likely is it that it will ever be running 50% of them on white at full power? Very un.

3. 1/3? Same.

So how did Happy get away with ambient mode? Right then, MOAR LEDS PLZ.

But yes please, at some point. There's no rush.

This is not the case. I don't want to go blind, or get sued or kicked out of events. I was considering using a similar type of ambient mode, because standing around talking (or walking) does not require a light show, and sometimes you just want to be able to see.

Also, the sort of patterns I'm envisioning would only have a small percentage (maybe 1/12 to 1/4 of them on at any given time), and I can't see white being a colour I'd use (I like actual colours), so I doubt there'd be any occasions when the power draw would be FULL ON MAX ALL AT ONCE.

Well, I could do randomly-timed xenon strobe mode, as long as everyone's ok with it being followed either by complete-darkness-filled-with-swearing mode, or Tats-bursts-into-flames mode.

And based on previous experience, bright:ambient ratio would be optimistically 1:1, with it potentially being 1:2, and bearing in mind that I'll be incorporating a hard switch for off.

(and about 5 hours would be good imo)

If I hadn't paid them off with money from my folks' death, mine still had another 8-10 years on them. But the motivation to do so any faster was limited, since the 4% interest rate was cheaper than the mortgage.

Credit cards, OTOH, are playing with fire. I have one in each country, on which I try to never carry over a balance. But it took me a long time to get to that point after cutting them all up in 2001 and shoveling my way out from under a lot of unnecessary debt.

I get the feeling student loans end up being a lot higher where you are. My degree cost about $15,000 (possibly $20,000 if I hadn't been able to cross credit a bunch of papers from Ye Olden Tymes). But that's pretty low compared with most of my peers and what they owe. $50,000 is not uncommon - but I hear that over there, ones in excess of $100,000 are normal, especially in the sciences.

I was actually colossally stupid as I came out of my undergrad debt free, but I didn't get enough money for my Ph.D. I acquired all of my debt in grad school. Luckily they are all government loans, so low interest with forgiveness after 10 years with work in the public sector (and I work for a public university).

I don't think student loans get forgiven here for any reason. I'm not even sure about death tbh.

Luckily for me, I don't have one.

I miss the base in the music but otherwise sounds interesting enough to listen to ;) I'll have to ask K'Ehleyr what the lyrics are about, I only know a few naughty words in Finnish.
