Note to all those Romney supporters threatening to move to New Zealand: it might behoove you to think about how we have socialised healthcare, strict gun control, and are about to legislate marriage equality. We like it that way.

Just a thought.

I think many Americans have *no idea* how far to the Right they are compared to most other Western democracies. Even all those Democrats who threatened to move to Canada if Romney won would find themselves Right of our Centre.

Our most left leaning Democrats would be dead center moderate in much of the rest of the first world. One of the most damaging propaganda campaigns waged by the right is to categorize the mainstream press, university education, and public schooling as incredibly left-leaning institutions, when in fact they are pretty much middle of the road, if not to the right.

I consider myself to be extremely liberal, and yet my views (particularly the ingrained or less than conscious ones) are more conservative than your average Netherlands citizen or even Tatjna here.

That said, reality has never been a conservative strong suit. Plus we live in a HUGE country where most people never own a passport or have the opportunity to travel abroad, with extremely insular press. So it's no wonder most of us don't know anything about, well, anything.

OUr current government is considered to be centre-right by NZ standards, and is galloping to the right as fast as it can go. But if they were to suggest replacing our health system with one like the US one, there'd be an uprising the likes of which you've never seen.

So instead they're attacking our education system. Heh.

Seriously. Every other English-speaking Western nation is way left of the US. Apparently Pakistan* is the only country that supported Romney for president. Maybe they should try there.

* I read this but have not verified it so it might be bollocks.

Those people who are threatening to move are the same people who truly believe that Obama is a Muslim communist, so it's really no surprise that they very little understanding of the political reality in other countries--they can't even understand the political reality here!

Nah, he'd probably only have angry drugs. Conservatives don't like the happy, sociable kind of drugs -- only liberals take those.

In the unlikely event that any wingnuts read this, they should note that New Zealand is a group of two islands in the South Atlantic, roughly 400km east of Argentina. You can fly from the UK to the capital, Port Stanley, by arrangement with the British military. Non-spanish speaking migrants are welcome, especially if they have an interest in sheep. The islanders and others refer to the place colloquially as the "Falklands", but the correct name is New Zealand.

It should not be confused with Aotearoa / Nuziland, a larger and more populous group of islands in the South Pacific. Don't go there, it's full of liberals.
