At work they have a net nanny. It's a basic one that blocks by domain. It appears to have blocked Tumblr for "Adult/Mature content." This makes me think two things.

1. I'm an adult, why am I not supposed to see adult content?
2. Has the person who labelled it 'mature' ever actually looked at Tumblr?

I can't believe people still use psychometric testing to decide whether someone can do a job. It's.. archaic.

yeah.. isn't it tho..

its doing my head in because

1 do i want to work in Johnsonville?
2 its an assurance company, which is not that disimilar to insurance but with financal advising..
3 do i want to work for a company who uses archaic outmoded psyc tests to 'test' it workers when you can find out the same thing via interviewing in a realistic mannor..

its just making me ranty and anxious at the same time.. mmm.. awsome!

I reckon all those questions will be more easily answered after you've met the folks you'd be working with and decided if you like them. ;-)

I've known bosses who use those kinds of tests not to know if someone can do the job but if someone 'fits' in terms of personality etc. No idea about the validity of these tests in general or the specific ones I've been asked to do, but in one case in particular they'd had a bad experience iwth someone who could do the job but really didn't fit, and it was more for indicative purposes...

Then for my current job we have to do basic literacy/numeracy/logic tests as a general indicator of.. smarts I guess. I didn't really have a problem with that either, taken in tandem with interviews etc..

Yeah, one of the people I work with is keen on enneagram tests. Not for ability to do the job, but how well they'd fit with the existing people in the team. I'd worry though if this was used as the sole indicator though.

Personality clashes can result in a lot of strife and lost time, and team fit is almost as important as ability to do the job.

*LOL*

Ours blocks nearly everything that contains photos. I can't see LJ photos at work either. It's an over-carefull net nanny.

Ours only blocks some photos, like those from riotclitshave. But it totally lets me see boobs as long as they're hosted on a site called homeworkhelp.com or something.

Ours is a funny set up - one can sidestep the official filter by dropping the proxy, but it still picks up some stuff from reports by other folk.

Our shop is run by a guy who assured me a litle while back that LiveJournal was a hot bed of viri and trojans (but he may well have been winding me up at the time - we've worked more or less together for well over a decade now).
