12:56 pm - I figured it out

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

I've always thought there was something wrong with me because I don't enjoy social gatherings where people 'socialise' rather than having a purpose.

Then I realised - it's just that everyone else is on drugs.

Alcohol is quite the social lubricant from what I gather. I wish they would make it in pill form, then maybe I could be social like everyone else.

Anyway, spotted today in Farmers:

Notice something missing?

lol

This is why i continue reading your blog. If socializing was anything like the entries you post, you would be the most popular person on lj.

I'm confused. That's exactly what we do at fidel's: no purpose, just socialising. Would that be better if we were bowling or [insert activity here]?

In their defense, they left off all the people who don't actually have superpowers (if we're treating ironman's suit as a power).

I think the difference for me is that Fidel's is a small group of friends gathering regularly. I know the people and can have meaningful conversations with them. I am daunted by large groups of strangers that I have to try and find common ground with and unsatisfied by small talk.

I understand that plenty of people feel this way, and have been to enough of these kind of gatherings to know that many people use a few drinks to get into the socialising frame of mind. Not necessarily drunk, but I do wonder how popular such gatherings would be if alcohol wasn't an option.

ah! So it's not about what you do with your friends, it's about what you do with acquaintances and strangers. In that case, I agree. I'm definitely relying on a lubricant in those circumstances.

I'm with rivet on this one.... Tea and coffee are also good social lubricants. (Not sure if this is caffeine related).

What bugs me is being the only freaking sober person. Which I often am. Because I am freaking responsible, and live out in the boonies, which means driving. And really, the only thing that makes drunk/high people bearable or interesting is being drunk or high (for the most part).

Social lubrication

(Link)

I dislike those situations because I end up babysitting and it's obnoxious.

I don't mind socializing in small gatherings of strangers, because you mention drugs/sex/children and suddenly all the ears perk and you've got a fairly interesting and sometimes clever conversation. If you mention religion and politics, it's a crap shoot, but it's generally entertaining.

I also think the comfort level is entirely dependent upon whether or not the group understands conversation dynamics. person A says something, person B (through whichever number) responds and the conversation naturally progresses...I'm finding that the art of conversation is dying. People are too quick to interrupt, put in their two cents and plan their response instead of listen to what is actually being said. It's a bad habit.

I'm glad you had fun at the baby shower (ahh, post-jumping)

ohh.. social situations, I am pretty good at those most of the time, but then i can make friends and busstops and falling of logs *coughs*.. however, depending on the my frame of mind at the time, i can become very unconformable around lots of very drunk people, but not always..

*ponders this*

I like fidels best *nods*
