09:37 am - First day of walking to work

Hee, I like that I have the option to delete Today in Outlook. I can also delete Three Weeks Ago if I want. Mwuahahaha. I would say there's a story in that, but it's already been done, by Stephen King, in 1983. Ah well.

This morning I woke up just before 7, made my lunch, had a coffee, and did a bunch of unpacking. Then I walked to work. It took about 5 minutes.

I bought appliances. I bought a new dishwasher because the existing one is still not working properly despite having been serviced. It's 12 years old and a Simpson - in other words it was the cheapest one they could get for a rental apartment and it's been nursed for as long as you can nurse it for, and it's inefficient and crappy and only going to be an expensive hassle that doesn't work well, so I thought "Fuckit."

I also bought a new cooktop, because the existing one is again a cheap Simpson that's probably the same age as the dishwasher, and although it works it's scratched and yucky-looking and this is my treat to myself since I'm getting more into cooking these days.

So I went to the appliance shop and since I was buying two big-ticket items for cash they gave me quite a substantial discount* and it came in just over $2000 for the two, installed. Which took a chunk out of my savings but that's what I saved the savings for so I'm not freaking out anywhere near as much as I thought I would.

Check out mah dishwasher - it's GERMAN.

Then I trotted off to the old house to let the cleaners in. Remember how this was the first time I was paying other people to do the donkey work of cleaning up after a move? I'm not sure I'd recommend it.

On Saturday I waited around till 4pm for the carpet cleaners and eventually left a note on the door saying it was open and to just get it done. I went back yesterday, still not done. I phoned them and they apologised profusely and got someone there within half an hour.

The cleaners then failed to show up. I am still trying to get hold of them to get them out there because the flat inspection's been done and we are now on faith that this service will show up before the new tenants move in. I have already paid for it so I'm... miffed. I suspect it's a small company that's been overwhelmed after running a deal on TreatMe, however I booked several weeks in advance and confirmed the booking and they should have bloody well shown up or called to let me know.

The fact that both the carpet cleaners and the other cleaners did this makes me wonder what the fuck is up with our cleaning industry, or whether I've just had astoundingly bad luck.

(the carpets do look really nice now)

* This is another one of those things - if you have money you get discounts, if you have to buy on HP you pay extra. This is arse-backwards and seems yet another way to exacerbate the gap between rich and poor.

I am now down to 60kg. My optimum weight is 58kg, after which I'll have to figure out how to eat a bit more but not too much more. I feel better for eating less ice cream and more fruit and vegies.

Also, I got drunk on Saturday (my version of drunk which is not really all that drunk) and walked straight past my house on the way home because I forgot what it looked like. I blame tieke and her teapots of fruity doom.

Did you get a Bosch or a Miele?

We bought a Miele and were surprised at how quiet it is when running. Takes a while to do it's job, but uses air rather than heat to do the final drying, which saves on energy usage.

It's a Bosch, which was the one with the best energy and water rating in my price range. I'll let you know how it goes!

Our Miele was stickered with $1500 & $1300, and when we enquired as to which was the correct price, the sales guy went checking and came back with $1100 - score!

In re: hired cleaners, does YoT have a grip of friends in need of pocket money? Or is chasing them around not worth the bother?

Hehe, he has cornered the market on paid chores around my house for himself!

This job was a one-off to leave the previous house looking really nice because the landlords were awesome. I got it on one of those coupon deals and so far, I wouldn't recommend them.

Sure, I got that, I just wondered if there were three-four competent and willing YoTs for that final big cleaning.

My nephew has friends who could use pocket money, but it wouldn't be worth it to me to chase them around. "OK Steven, you mop the floor while Chris and Devon scrub the kitchen . . . no, *really* scrub hard . . . no, don't use the wet mop on the hardwood floors . . . no, it's not time for the mid-morning break yet . . ."

Mmmmm, new dishwasher and cooktop!

Sorry about the bad luck with the cleaners. I've had carpet cleaners show up exactly on the dot, after texting that they were on their way. On a Saturday, too.

Now you have me wondering how I'd go about getting the carpets cleaned in the new house. Not that I plan to for a while, but when I do I'm wondering about how it works when there's furniture in the house.

They lift/move the furniture, and clean under it. Then they put it back into place with the furniture legs resting on protective glossy cardboard cups that look like muffin wrappers so that it doesn't pick up any dampness while the carpet dries.

Huh. I am amazed by the clever ways that servicepeople do these things. Moving my furniture was another learning experience, watching these guys that do it every day.

yeah damn here's hoping the other cleaner when they do show up don't fuck up the nice clean carpet. i'm a bundle of joy.

i exponentially improved the quality of cleaning in my ratty old dishwasher by removing the spray arms and poking bits of wire in the holes, and shaking them upside down etc: grains of rice get stuck in those and just will not come out otherwise. but a new dishwasher is definitely on the want list: just got to remodel the benches and kitchen layout a bit... one day when I don't feel like shit from morning to night.

Thanks for the tip, I'll remember that one!

I'm kind of new do dishwasher ownership, the last house being the first that had one I used regularly. I'm definitely sold on them now though.

I like how much cleaner the dishes are than handwashed ones, and also that I'm not running the tap down the sink while waiting for the water to heat.

That's my favourite element of the whole thing. In fact, I've been known to call them 'dish hiders' for that reason.

Cleaning the spray arms and filters of a dishwasher is a regular job that keeps things ticking along nice and clean as wellas prolonging the life of the device. One just has to remember to do it regularly*...

* i.e. not manually, that is once a year...

Firstly, I love that LJ now warns me that "You are about to view content that may not be appropriate for minors." when the post is titled something as innocuous as "First day of walking to work".

Secondly, it's not true about not getting deals on HP for appliances. When we moved in to our house, we bought a fridge/washer/dryer on 48 months interest free... after getting them to knock hundreds and hundreds off the price.

Appliance buying tip: keep asking for a better price until they stop giving you one. Then ask for free delivery/install. :)

LJ does that because I tagged my journal 'may contain adult themes'. Because occasionally it does. So if you're not logged in then it shows you the warning.
