Before, I was doing this just to tell the story. Now I am doing it so that there will be a public record in case I ever need it.

Remember last week when I wrote this?

Well, I called them, as you do. I spoke to Sami, who is handling my case. I explained the situation and he did the calculations and went "Gosh, you're right, you should only owe about $380. Moreover, I will now, while you are on the phone, transfer that $300 from your income tax to the amount you owe us."

And he did. He then undertook to send me a letter stating the correct amount owing. I made it clear that I would not pay the bill until the letter arrived, and that I would cease making my token payments as of last week. He agreed, acknowledged what I had said and promised to send the letter within 10 working days.

The letter arrived today.

Imagine my surprise when I read the following:

"In response to the conversation on Thursday 23rd June 2011;

I am confirming that the instalment arrangement for your arrears will continue for $20.00 weekly until the final payment is due 2nd November 2011.

As agreed, the final balance of $87.83 will be written off under our administration costs once the final payment is made. Please contact me the following week that you have the final payment and I will continue the account maintenance to have this completed.

Outstanding amount: $1246.60"

If it didn't have my tax number on it and make reference to the $20.00 payment, I'd think they'd sent the wrong person's letter. Seriously, how did my debt go from $900 originally, down to $800 after me having paid $220 on it, down to just under $400 on the phone last week, up to $1246? And how did "I will stop the payments this week, please send me a bill for the rest and I'll pay it straight away" translate into "Hey we'll carry on these payments for another 5 months"??

And their website is having a fail so I can't log in to see if they've added the $300 to the bill instead of subtracting it or something.

*frustration*

So I guess I'll be calling them again tomorrow. Am I allowed to yell yet?

I don't know if they do it to everyone, but I know Dr Wheel has some choice things to say about the way they've messed up his stuff too.

I suspect it happens a lot more than is reported. There'll be those who never have it happen, those who have it happen but don't notice and just pay the bills, and those who have as many problems as I've had but don't talk about it because *ssh* we don't talk about money here *shh*.

Personally, I'm all for divulging the details and doing it loudly because if enough people shout loudly enough, eventually something might change, right? Right?

i was thinking today on the way home about the whole thing with govt departments being only pseudo accountable: the business doesn't fail if people are dickheads, you have effectively no choice about being a customer.

however they are staffed by people. and people care if they are (clearly and legitimately) exposed to ridicule

I have written to my MP who patted me on the head and gave me a phone number that led to a (turned out to be temporary) fix. I have attempted to get the interest of the press and they don't care.

Fair Go might be worth a look though. Because seriously, this is bullshit.

also Target appear to be making moves towards including a more documentary style to some scandal-exposure segments.

While I'm not opposed in the slightest to the thought of going to Fair Go or otherwise trying them in the court of public opinion, you might want to be a little careful. Because if I remember rightly, some of this is because the father of the Youth of Today™ hasn't been paying support, yes? And if you go on telly shouting that from the roof tops... there may be consequences. Not necessarily bad consequences, mind you, but it's something to keep in mind.

I've had a relatively decent time with the IRD, largely because while I owe them a moderately large sum of money thanks to a friend, they set up a payment schedule that's only going to cost me around $1,000 in penalties & interest. So, you know. Not as bad as I feared. But it's a much less complicated situation than yours.

The unpaid Child Support is a side-issue to this one, which stemmed from them calculating Working For Families payments based on an income that they pulled out of their arses, that was $30000 less than I get paid, only 3 weeks after me having supplied my income details. This led to an overpayment, and the rest is history.

I dunno. I'm completely stumped as to how he could have misunderstood what I agreed to so badly.

It might be an idea to work out how you can record your conversations with them so you have a non-arguable record of what was agreed on the phone to demonstrate their collective inability to get it right. Oh, and let them know that you are recording the conversation so they pay careful attention to what they say, rather than them saying whatever makes you feel happy and then they do what ever else appears to them to be a Good Idea At The Time.

They have the right to record your interactions with them, so how can they complain if you do likewise?

It's a fuckup, he's pressed + instead of -.

$800 should only be $380 is a difference of $420. $800-$420=$380 ... $800+$420=$1220 ... he pressed plus by mistake.

Ring 'em. Get the same guy, point out what's happened and he'll go "d'oh!"

Damn right it's a fuckup. It's a fuckup at the end of a long string of fuckups, all theirs, which have ended up costing me nearly $1000. And I'm sick of it.
