So, say I bought an apartment in the central city and sold my car.

Positives: I'd save myself about $2000 a year on running costs, plus whatever I'd pay for parking if I kept it. I'd also save the $130 a month I'm currently paying in train fares.

Negatives: I'd have to give up my shearing run, which is worth about $2000 a year to me.
I'd lose my ability to go wherever, whenever with minimum hassle, and help other people by giving them rides places.

If I bought an apartment in the central city and kept my car?

Positives: I'd be able to keep my shearing run and independence.

Negatives: I could add around $200 a month +GST to my expenses.

*sigh*

It makes me happy that I do it rather than when I do it.

Third option - sign up for a car sharing service and use a car only when you need it.

Ooh! That sounds like a very viable third option. Thanks.

I've looked at Cityhop a number of times, and it's always been on balance too expensive ($15/hr) and too much of a hassle (cars parked in town, not in Brooklyn where I live) to be worth the $95 joining fee. I just use taxis when buses/motorscooter/walking doesn't work.

Yeah, if I were living in Brooklyn I'd probably keep my car - because there'd be somewhere to keep it for less than $50 a week!

I just did the maths and if I count parking for when I bring my car into town, it's currently costing me about $3620 a year to own it. On the upside, it means I can easily get out to Miramar for circus classes.

Yeah, living a carless life is limiting - I wouldn't even consider a weekly committment in Miramar unless I were living a lot closer.

I have owned a car since I was 17. Contemplating life without one is quite scary. However, I've also gone from living 65km from the nearest town to considering living slap in the middle of a city.

Changey Tats is changey.

I would almost consider cycling to Miramar from the central city. It's Wellington's narrow, winding hill roads that scare me the most.

Looking for a show of hands from people with parking spaces A Long Way Away.

[edit] My fixed costs add up to about $700 a year. It could end up being more but the car is low km and well maintained so it's only a set of tyres every 2-3 years, rego, insurance, warrants and servicing. Say $1000 a year to allow for occasional repairs.

A variant on Option 4: Add a scooter for the trips to Not Far Away, and to the car parked A Long Way Away (although I suspect Upper Hutt is Too Far Away, even for tats)...

A daughter of mine lived in the Miramar vicinity and used a scooter to get to & from the city, as well as having a car for the trips with hubby & shopping. She recently moved to Tauranga & had the scooter shipped up for commuting around and about.

funny, i was scrolling down just now thinking "haa! stick it in my driveway!" of course, i have to finish the concreting up to the garage.

there's a few streets around that are free parking, too, and 15-20 minutes walk from CBD. eg mine, kelburn. plenty of people drive to park at the bottom of norway st from Further Suburbs, and then bus or walk into town for work.

Y'know, $3620 is a lot of single day rentals from the car rental place in cuba street. And it's one hell of a lot of snapper beeps to and from Miramar.

I know - I'm going to feel odd not having my own car (again) too.

Add to the savings the amount of time spent commuting to&from the 'burbs, taking note of the time spent standing in the rain waiting for the bus that may or may not arrive when scheduled (+/- 5 minutes according to Metlink). At least most of the city stops have verandas to stand under when it's wet or hot (my home bus stop is a muddy puddle this time of year with no cover within sight).

Repeating for emphasis: Lovely.Wide.Roads.

I am terrified of cycling in traffic. The only way I'll get on a bike is if I can avoid cars as much as possible by not occupying the same space as them.

Have you thought about using Cityhop? It looks very similar to the car sharing system I use in Toronto which works really well for me.

Have you thought of living in one of the suburbs on the edge of the CBD like Newtown, Kelburn or Mt Vic? Those places have on street parking (maybe $90 a year for resident bays) and town is still a walk or a short bus ride. Works for me.

Yes, I have been looking around those areas too. Unfortunately the market is pretty sparse at the moment and I haven't found anything that floats my boat yet. But I'm definitely looking.

Car share? (Some has probably mentioned this but I have not read the other comments!)
