At home, I make compost.

I have one of those black bins that my mother always referred to as Daleks, those ones where you put stuff in the top and compost comes out the bottom. I also have a heap, for the screeds of large tangly stuff that won't fit in the Dalek.

I get a great deal of satisfaction out of turning the heap over regularly with my pitchfork. It makes me feel farmery.

I am discovering that the Dalek method is faster but the heap is far more fun.

Welcome to my exciting life.

Also, thanks to kishenehn, I got sucked down an internet rabbit hole, bought a book, and now Facebook is trying to sell me farms in Wyoming.

I've not heard of dalek-type composters before. I've seen ones that are built of barrels you can roll to help with the whole aeration thing.

Mary O'Hara.

And these bins are a NZ thing so they may not have spread to the US yet. Earthmaker.

Also, I've spent a ton of time in Wyoming and I cannot at all recommend it.

Wow, I feel accomplished now! :)

And seriously, you could do a LOT worse than Wyoming ... you just have to appreciate rural life, and not be winter-averse. My family lived there for a while when I was a kid, and we were all a little heartbroken when we left.

I am from a rural background, but it doesn't really snow here so I've no idea how I'd cope with that. It gets cold, it just sleets instead of snowing.

Can you tell me a little more about the Dalek bin? I'm going to call it that because it fits and I don't know the proper word for it even in German.

I was thinking of getting one but our back yard is problematic. I can either place it at the very top of the steep climb, which would mean it's inaccessible in wet weather and an acrobatic challenge in good weather. Or I can place it in the corner of our "terrace" which is more like a light shaft behind the house. There it would be near the windows and sitting on slid stone (near a sink though).

What I'm after is: Does it smell in warm weather? Does it attract a lot of flies or rats or mice or roaches? Roaches would be worst. Does it lose fluids at the bottom, like rot? All of those would be a showstopper for the terrace version.

And most important: Has yours ever started to cry "Exterminate!!!" at some point?

This is the website for the Dalek bin.

I've had them in a few spots. At the moment it's behind the shed away from the house, on dirt. I did have one on concrete once and it didn't seem to have leaks - the rain couldn't get in so there was no juice to come out the bottom. I've never had one be stinky and as far as I can tell it doesn't attract vermin of any kind. It just sort of sits there.

Thanks for the link. I would expect it to be that way but I wanted a first hand experience. Thank you. Sounds like we could have one next year.

I wonder if your bin is bettter than the one I once had. I found it to be a snare and a delusion in that I never managed to get the bottom 'layer' out completely before gravity dumped the only semi-composted stuff down from above, blocking my way to the back of the bin. So now I have a three {bin/year} system with front-opening bins. Except they're coming to the end of their lives and no-one seems to make anything like that in the size I need any more.

That was a grump, just in case you hadn't noticed :-)

I dunno. I tend to only empty it once a year and usually the not-quite-processed stuff is above the top of the door when I do, so I can scoop the compost out from under and the top layer ends up on the bottom.

I have the heap because my garden produces so much green waste - it's only really food and grass clippings that go in the bin.

Following the link you gave ,above it looks a lot better. I wonder if there's anything similar 'up here' - must look.

Our neighbours appear to work as beer brewers, which is a laudable profession but the waste from their brewing operation smelled like bad mince and the smell*travelled*.

In the end (after asking them to cover it up somehow) we broke and bought them a dalek.
