This year we have to work Christmas Eve. Based on the lack of traffic on my walk to work, most people finished work last Friday. After the ridiculous half-a-day-followed-by-lunch thing that every workplace seems to do, I am off work for 16 whole, glorious days. Then I'm back at work for a week, then it's Kiwiburn.

The thing I am most looking forward to is waking up and deciding for myself what I'll spend my time doing. It's no secret that I resent how much work encroaches on my ability to pursue my own interests, how I have to squeeze my own things around this huge timesink that is earning a living. To the point where a big interest these days is Not Working.

I want to go fishing, play games, hang out in my garden, make costumes, and spend all morning in bed if I want. But mostly I want to have those options open to me. Whether I actually use them or not is moot.

For those in the NH, our Christmas holidays are actually kind of cool because it's summer, so getting out and about and doing things is both possible and pleasant.

Why can't it be today?

Btw what is Kiwiburn? You might have explained this before and apologies if you have but I don't remember it :-/ (memory sucks after my stress collapse :-/).

You've heard of Burning Man? Kiwiburn is NZ's version. I've been involved in organising it on and off since about 2007. ;-)

Man, it would be awfully nice to have a chunk off like that in summer. I mean, not for me since I'm a deadbeat, but to have Eric around for a week when it's not ball shriveling cold.

We have *zero* holidays in winter, and all of them are concentrated in summer. Which is nice, but it makes winter very long and dreary with no breaks.

Yeah, I can see that being a drawback. At least we have Christmas to break up the school year a little.

Eric's lucky that he's worked for automotive suppliers for the past 15 years. Most corporations don't give you the week between Christmas and New Year off, especially in accounting. But since the big three shut down he gets an extra week of paid time off.

K gets a whole off between Christmas and New Year's but it is too dark and cold to live....and everything interesting is closed. Let's go to blah museum! Closed. Blah heritage site? Closed.

I have everything crossed that the weather will stay calm and I can get some fishing in. ;-)

Enjoy your time off!

I'm lucky enough to be off until the 2nd even though I work in controlling/accounting ... 10 days of doing nothing ... yeah!
